Creatine is synthesized in the human body from dietary amino acids. Synthesis originates in the kidneys where precursors, arginine and glycine, form guanidoacetic acid. This product is then methylated in the liver, forming creatine and then is transported from there to all the cells in the body via the bloodstream. Since creatine is involved in all processes that require energy, muscle, brain and nerve cells receive correspondingly larger amounts. Creatine is primarily involved in muscle contraction and 95% of creatine stored within skeletal muscle.
